GEORGIAN BAY GENERAL HOSPITAL

Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) is a 113-bed community hospital, serving the communities of Midland, Penetanguishene, and Christian Island, as well as Tiny, Tay, Georgian Bay and Springwater Townships. The population base of this area is 55,000 and swells to more than 200,000 for six months of the year. In addition to a large seasonal population, throughout the year GBGH also serves a significant Francophone and Indigenous community, which is an important role to the hospital. In 2017, GBGH received its Partial French Language Services Designation, confirming the hospital’s commitment to providing designated services in French for francophone patients. In 2023, GBGH received the highest standard of Accreditation a hospital can receive with a designation of Accredited with Exemplary Standing. To achieve this level of recognition for excellence, GBGH met 100% of Required Organizational Practices and more than 99% of 2,100 standards.

GBGH offers services comparable to other medium size community hospitals in Ontario, supporting the general healthcare needs of its community. At the Midland hospital, services include a 24-hour emergency department, inpatient medicine, obstetrics, general surgery, outpatient day surgery, ICU, diagnostic imaging (radiology, ultrasound, and CT scan), pharmacy, respiratory therapy, inpatient physiotherapy, ambulatory care, Telehealth video conferencing and a complex continuing care and rehabilitation unit serving patients from North Simcoe and Muskoka. GBGH’s also operates a nine-station satellite Dialysis site in a community location within Midland. GBGH is also getting closer to bringing MRI services to the local community. In February 2023, GBGH was approved to operate an MRI, performing approximately 2,000 scans annually, including specialty MRIs for cardiac and high-risk breast. Over the winter of 2024, GBGH was approved to go to tender and award construction to build the expansion that will house the MRI. Construction is estimated to begin in the spring of 2024 and the hospital projects the first patient to receive an MRI at GBGH will take place in early 2025. GBGH’s future MRI will not only serve the hospital’s immediate community, it will assist in adding capacity to the system which reduces wait times across the region.
